A trip through the USA may only yield a couple of passport stamps, but it opens up myriad opportunities. California’s redwood forests, surf-fringed coast, viticulture and pop culture make the country’s West Coast a rewarding destination, though some visitors overlook its northerly reaches. Up above the Golden State lie Portland, Seattle and the beautiful Puget Sound. Head south and you can take in ornate iron balconies, jazz, easy living and delicate creole dishes common to New Orleans, but also the tangy barbecue and twangy country charms of Nashville. Washington DC has perhaps the greatest collection of museums in the world arranged along its (eminently walkable) National Mall, but this mid-Atlantic portion of the country also has Baltimore’s lively waterfront, Philadelphia’s monuments to independence, and the cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of Williamsburg, Virginia. Travellers to Utah, meanwhile, can take in the otherworldly rock formations of Bryce Canyon National Park, the spires and domes of Salt Lake City, and make the most of the diverse culinary offerings in Las Vegas, just across the state border.
