LAOS

Laos has long been overlooked thanks to the accessible charms of neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam. However, its mountainous landscape and strong Buddhist traditions mean you won’t want to miss out when visiting Southeast Asia.
The mighty Mekong is what shapes Laos, especially in UNESCO-protected Luang Prabang. This striking heritage town on the river’s eastern shore is the heart of Buddhism in the country. Walk through peaceful temples and rise before dawn to witness the daily ritual of Tak Bat, when monks collect alms from the local community. Ride along the Mekong at sunset to see caves full of Buddhist statues lit up by the sinking sun.
The capital, Vientiane, is known for its slow pace, with temples, royal palaces and war memorials making for memorable encounters. Deep in the south, Pakse and the nearby 4,000 islands archipelago are ideal for winding down at the end of a life-enriching trip.
