The Roman ruins of Ephesus are extensive and still only partly excavated. One of the most unique buildings here is the Library of Celsus, which once held nearly 12,000 scrolls as well as the sarcophagus of Celsus, a governor of Roman Asia who paid for the construction of the library. The façade of the building remains, carefully rebuilt from the original stones.
