5 of the best... stargazing spots

Stargazing in Chile

There is something special about sleeping in the great outdoors with the stars twinkling overhead. Here our team of experts share a few of their favourite stargazing spots across the world.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

Jordan’s Wadi Rum offers some of the most extraordinary desert scenery imaginable. During the day, the dramatic colours of the red sand dunes are accentuated by towering jebels; by night, the sky comes alive and visitors can enjoy the galaxy of stars overhead. Cox & Kings’ Middle East expert Leah Reavley recommends staying in a local Bedouin dome-style tent, or should you wish to fully embrace the stargazing then follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia and take your roll-mat and sleeping bag outside for the night.

Loisaba Star Beds, Kenya

Our Africa product manager recommends Loisaba in Kenya. Set on the edge of Laikipia plateau just north of Mount Kenya, Loisaba is luxurious yet in perfect balance with the surrounding wilderness. The lavish cottages of the main house are complemented by two sets of 'Star Beds' - Koija, overlooking the Ewaso Ng'iro river and Kiboko, above a watering hole. Set high on handcrafted wooden platforms, the comfortable king-sized beds can either be wheeled out onto the uncovered deck for the night or left under the shelter of a thatched roof. What is more, each camp is run in partnership with the local Laikipiak Maasai, bringing income to the local community.

Blue Mountains, Australia

Blue Mountain Private Safaris offer the perfect setting to unwind and indulge after a day of wildlife spotting and enjoying the national park’s famed Three Sisters, and other breathtaking scenery. Cox & Kings’ Australasia product manager Owen Walker says that the altitude and dark skies make the Blue Mountains perfect for star watching. Blue Mountains Private Safaris provide luxury camping at its best. Guests can rest their heads and admire the stars from the comfort of a sumptuous version of the Australian swag.

Explora, Atacama Desert, Chile

Nestled in 17 hectares of its own grounds in northern Chile, explora offers luxury synonymous with adventure and local traditions. The 50 spacious rooms are housed in three long buildings, just outside San Pedro de Atacama village. Panoramic views can be enjoyed across the Atacama – the world’s driest desert. Robert Webber recommends marvelling at the night sky, including the Southern Cross, through a telescope from the hotel’s own observatory.

Lion Sands, South Africa

The Treehouse at Lion Sands is the epitome of a luxury bedroom under the stars. From the safety of the platform and a wonderful mosquito-netted four-poster bed, guests can enjoy the atmospheric sounds of hippos, frogs and lions throughout the night. Cox & Kings’ Africa expert Rhys Watkins says the service is exceptional with details such as the option of enjoying a fabulous picnic whilst watching the sun set.
